Flights
Each family's flights, from the moment they are picked. Amber means chosen but not bought yet; green means booked.
Ñuñoa is a quiet, leafy neighbourhood with shops, cafés and a metro line. Look for your Airbnb within walking distance. From the airport, show this address to the driver.
The birthday
We celebrate on the day itself, Tuesday 23 February, in Santiago. Where and when exactly will be here once it is decided.
Before you fly
Passport
Valid for the whole stay. Check it now: a renewal takes weeks, and February is close. No visa is needed for up to 90 days.
Cabin bag
Economy fares include one cabin bag; the cheapest ones often include no checked bag, so add it when booking. On Air France the cabin bag and your handbag may weigh 12 kg together, and the cabin bag must fit 55 × 35 × 25 cm including wheels.
Travel insurance
The Hungarian TB and the European health card (EHIC) do not pay for anything in Chile. Buy travel insurance that covers illness, not only accidents, and read the age limits: many policies change at 70 or 80.
Arrival declaration
Chile's agriculture and customs form (SAG). Fill it in on the day you land or the evening before, save the confirmation, and show it at the exit. If you travel with children, answer yes to the question about minors.
Nothing raw: no fruit, vegetables, fresh meat, cheese or honey. Packaged and processed food is fine if you declare it and go through the red gate. Chile fines undeclared food on the spot.
Flying with small children
Under 2 flies on a parent's lap; ask for a bassinet seat on the long flight when you book, as there are only a few. From 2, a child needs their own seat.
Santiago in February
Weather
Hot and dry: around 30 °C in the afternoon, around 13 °C at night, and almost no rain. Strong sun; bring a hat, sunscreen and a layer for the evenings.
Time
Chile is 4 hours behind Hungary in February.
Getting around
Uber, Didi and Cabify work around the clock, are safe, and cost far less than taxis in Hungary.
Money and plugs
The currency is the Chilean peso; cards work almost everywhere. Sockets are 220 V: thin two-pin plugs fit, but thick Hungarian plugs often do not, so bring an adapter.
